HOLLEY RECOGNIZED

Orange Coast College sophomore tailback Ray Holley has been named National Division Player of the Week, leading the Pirates to a 44-28 season-opening football victory Saturday at Santa Monica.

Holley, a 5-9, 195-pounder, rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries, despite being taken out of the game for the final 10 minutes.

He scored on runs of two, one and one yards.

LIONS’ COLIC HONORED

Vanguard University junior defender Tomislav Colic has been named Golden State Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Colic had a hat trick in a 4-1 victory over Doane (Neb.) on Sunday.

He had an assist in a 4-1 loss to Hastings (Neb.) on Saturday, after contributing an assist in a 2-0 win over La Sierra on Sept. 3.

His eight points in the three games surpassed his total from last season.

CHARITY GOLF TOURNEY

A charity golf tournament held Oct. 5 in honor of former Corona del Mar High boys’ basketball star Markus Muller-Stach is holding registration.

Edith’s third annual Charity Golf Classic will be held at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine. The fee is $250 per person, which includes lunch, a gift bag, golf, dinner and entry into a drawing for prizes.

The shotgun start is at noon. A silent auction begins at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner and a prize drawing.

There will be contests for putting, long drive and closest to the pin.

Proceeds go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
