Showing that it intends to challenge Harvard-Westlake and Loyola for Mission League supremacy in 2014, Mission Hills Alemany went 4-0 in the California Classic this weekend with victories over Northern California schools De La Salle, Mitty, Buchanan and Bellarmine.
On Saturday, junior pitchers Kyle Merkel and Brian Ponticelli each threw six innings in a 3-2 win over Buchanan and a 13-3 win over De La Salle.
Junior outfielder Ruben Cardenas has picked up a scholarship offer from Nevada.
Harvard-Westlake also went 4-0 this weekend. Jack Flaherty threw four shutout innings on Saturday. Sean Kiley, a senior who was injured last season and ended up pitching JVs, is bidding for the No. 2 pitching spot. He threw four shutout innings on Sunday, striking out four and walking one in a 7-0 win over Bellarmine.
West Ranch’s Jake Spurlin had a four-for-four performance and also had a two-run home run in his weekend games.
