Baseball: Huntington Beach wins first Division 1 championship

Huntington Beach Coach Benji Medure got a pie in his face and was dumped with Gatorade and water by players celebrating the Oilers’ first baseball championship in school history on Saturday night, a 3-1 win over Hart in the Southern Section Division 1 final at San Manuel Stadium.
“It’s unbelievably special,” Medure said. “It’s not an easy thing to do. In 107 years, we haven’t done it. We made history.”
Noah Davis struck out 10, walked none and allowed four hits for the Oilers (26-8). Jack Ralston struck out five, walked none and allowed six hits for Hart (21-10-1).
Huntington Beach scored two runs in the first inning. Davis retired 13 consecutive batters at one point. Hart picked up a run in the sixth on a wild pitch. Huntington Beach added another run on a Tyler Murray single in the sixth.
In the end, Huntington Beach’s pitching staff was second to none and led a season-long surge after the Oilers began the year with a 2-5 record.
Nick Plaia finished with two hits for Hart and so did Robert Reeves, who had a triple.
Logan Pouelsen had two doubles for Huntington Beach.
