With Los Angeles having moved up a division, the City Section Division III title contenders are plentiful for the upcoming season.
Lots of schools that were once football powers are in Division III, including Granada Hills Kennedy, Fremont and Wilson.
Friday’s opener between Franklin and North Hollywood could be a sneak preview of two teams that will be Division III contenders.
Franklin is loaded with juniors who played on varsity last season, including running back David Telles, who scored nine touchdowns. The team’s quarterback will be junior Mario Bobadilla, a transfer from Roosevelt.
Kennedy is expected to be much improved and could be a Division III surprise.
For the first time, the winner of the City Division III title will advance to a regional state bowl game.
