After blowing an 18-point third-quarter lead and then falling behind by three points in the final 90 seconds, Sierra Canyon rallied to pull out a 60-57 win over Windward in the Gold Coast League girls’ championship game on Thursday night at Viewpoint. The Trailblazers had no field goals in the fourth quarter.
Call it the lucky bounce. Kennedy Burke’s tying free throw with 16.7 seconds bounced at least five times before falling through the net. Then she made the second free throw for a one-point lead. With 4.8 seconds left, Cheyanne Wallace added two more free throws. Emily Surloff got off a long shot at the buzzer that came close..
Burke finished with 25 points and Wallace had 16. Sierra Canyon made 15 of 16 free throws in the second half.
Jayde Woods led Windward (15-9) with 19 points. Myrrah Joseph had 13 points. Sierra Canyon had a 15-0 run in the first half and Windward had a 14-0 run in the second half.
Sierra Canyon is 20-4 and will likely be selected for the Southern Section Open Division playoffs that begin a week from Saturday.
“I’ll take a heart attack game going into the playoffs,” Sierra Canyon Coach Alicia Komaki said.
