Udonis Haslem ordered to sit out Game 6

Miami Heat forward Udonis Haslem was suspended by the NBA for Game 6 of his team’s series against Indiana.

Haslem committed a flagrant foul against Indiana’s Tyler Hansbrough during the second quarter of Game 5 on Tuesday night, shortly after Hansbrough struck Miami’s Dwyane Wade and opened a cut over his right eye.

Haslem and Hansbrough were assessed flagrant-1 fouls on the respective plays. If they had been issued flagrant-2 fouls, they would have been ejected. Hansbrough’s foul was upgraded Wednesday to a flagrant-2, but he’s eligible to play in Game 6, while Haslem cannot.

Also Wednesday, Miami reserve forward Dexter Pittman was suspended three games for his flagrant foul against Indiana’s Lance Stephenson late in Game 5. Pittman has played only six minutes in the playoffs.

The U.S. men’s basketball team will open Olympic play against France on July 29 and close preliminary-round play against Argentina on Aug. 6.

FIBA, basketball’s world governing body, announced game times and pairings Wednesday.

Three of the Americans’ five games in pool play will start at 10:15 p.m. local time (2:15 p.m. PDT), and their two weekend games, including their opener, will tip off at 2:30 p.m. (6:30 a.m. PDT).

UCLA women move into tie for second

The top-ranked UCLA women’s golf team has moved up the leaderboard and into contention after 36 holes in the NCAA championships at Franklin, Tenn.

The Bruins posted a team score of 290 (+2) in the second round and moved into a second-place tie at 582 (+6), 11 shots behind Alabama, which was at five-under-par 571 after posting a score of 285 (-3). North Carolina and Virginia were also tied in the runner-up spot.

USC climbed into seventh place at the Vanderbilt Legends Club as freshman Doris Chen shot a three-under 69. The Trojans were at 585 (+9) after a second-round score of even-par 288.

Prosecutors finally have some momentum in their perjury case against Roger Clemens, even if it means dragging in former major leaguer David Segui, a witness who is apparently so reluctant to testify that the judge threatened from the bench: “If he doesn’t show up, he’ll be arrested like anyone else.”

U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton indicated he was leaning heavily toward allowing prosecutors to call Segui and another witness to counter an overall impression left by Clemens’ lawyers during the 6-week-old trial. Segui is expected to say that sometime around 2001 he was told by Clemens’ strength coach, Brian McNamee, that McNamee had saved evidence from injections of players to placate a nagging wife.

An Oklahoma judge has ordered the release of a man arrested in connection with a shooting that left at least eight people wounded following an NBA playoff game.

Online court records show an order was signed Wednesday to release Rodney Hill from custody, pending additional investigation into the shootings Monday night in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown entertainment district.

Officers also arrested a 17-year-old boy on Tuesday.

Eight people suffered gunshot wounds after a fight erupted into gunfire following the Thunder- Lakers playoff game.

Sprint Cup champion Rusty Wallace heads the group of five picked for the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Owner Leonard Wood and drivers Cotton Owens, Herb Thomas and Buck Baker joined Wallace in the hall’s fourth class.

Top-seeded John Isner advanced to the Nice Open quarterfinals in France, beating Belgium’s Xavier Malisse, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), in the clay-court event.

The American will face Nikolay Davydenko in the quarterfinals. The Russian topped seventh-seeded Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
