Angels’ Torii Hunter likely to return next week

OAKLAND—Right fielder Torii Hunter, on the restricted list since May 14 while he deals with the arrest of his 17-year-old son, Darius McClinton-Hunter, on a sexual assault charge in Texas, will likely rejoin the Angels at the beginning of next week’s homestand, Manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday.
Scioscia said Hunter, who has now missed 10 games, has been throwing, running and hitting but will probably need to work out for a day or two in Anaheim before returning to the lineup. The Angels begin a three-game series against the New York Yankees on Monday in Anaheim.
Mark Trumbo has filled in admirably in right field during Hunter’s absence, but the right fielder for Wednesday’s game against the Oakland Athletics will be 24-year-old Kole Calhoun, who will be making his first big league start after being promoted from triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.
“It definitely gives you an adrenaline rush seeing your name in the lineup — it was awesome to see,” said Calhoun, who played the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s 5-0 win over the A’s. “It was nice to get that inning in [Tuesday night]. I was anxious to get in there, and it definitely eased the butterflies.”
Shortstop Erick Aybar, who was knocked out of Tuesday night’s game in the seventh inning when he was hit in the right knee by a pitch, is not in Wednesday’s lineup. Aybar will be available, but Scioscia said he he hopes to avoid using the switch-hitter.
The Angels lineup: CF Mike Trout, SS Maicer Izturis, 1B Albert Pujols, DH Kendrys Morales, LF Mark Trumbo, 2B Howie Kendrick, 3B Alberto Callaspo, RF Kole Calhoun, C Bobby Wilson, P Jered Weaver.
The A’s lineup: 2B Jemile Weeks, CF Coco Crisp, RF Josh Reddick, LF Seth Smith, DH Jonny Gomes, 1B Kila Ka’aihue, C Kurt Suzuki, 3B Josh Donaldson, SS Cliff Pennington, P Jarrod Parker.
