UCLA football: Freshmen offensive linemen tandem gets first review

UCLA started two freshmen on the offensive line, guard Alex Redmond and tackle Caleb Benenoch, playing next to each other against California.

It was the topic of conversation after the 37-10 victory. It continued to be referenced during Coach Jim Mora’s conference call Sunday.

The verdict?

Wait and see.

“It was a great learning experience,” Mora said. “I didn’t look out there and go, ‘Oh my gosh, we have two freshmen playing side-by-side.” ’

Redmond has been a starter since the season began. Benenoch was added at tackle this past week after Torian White suffered a broken bone and torn ligament in his right leg against Utah.

The Redmond-Benenoch duo opened against California to mixed results. The Bears brought defensive backs up to the line of scrimmage to take away the run -- UCLA gained only 78 yards rushing. But the two did a competent job protecting Brett Hundley.

“I thought they did a good job at the point of attack,” offensive line coach Adrian Klemm said. “Cal was putting linebackers where defensive tackles were suppose to be. It’s one of the things we have to be patient about. They have to learn that they’re not blocking individuals and numbers, they’re blocking the front. If a defensive guy is out of position in front of you, just block him.”
