Ben Scrivens, Kings shut out the Panthers, 3-0

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Kings Coach Darryl Sutter said that backup goalie Ben Scrivens would get his first start this season at some point on this four-game trip.

Some point arrived Sunday afternoon.

And it made total sense. Scrivens has excellent career numbers against the Florida Panthers, including a shutout last season when he was with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Those numbers got even better with a 3-0 victory over the Panthers on Sunday at BB&T Center.

Scrivens faced 20 shots and was sharp when the Panthers attacked with an occasional flurry, including a stop against Brad Boyes on a breakaway in the opening minute of the third period.

The Kings scored twice in the second period and once in the third. The first two were highlight-reel worthy. Daniel Carcillo scored his first goal with the Kings, at 8:46, and Justin Williams made it 2-0 at 14:55 of the second. The final goal came from Jordan Nolan, his first of the season at 12:28 of the third, and was keyed by a quick counterattack.

For Williams, it was an especially memorable goal. It was the 500th career point for the hard-working, skilled veteran, who used a clever give-and-go with linemate Anze Kopitar after Panther defenseman Brian Campbell turned it over.

Carcillo’s goal came off a slick play too. Center Mike Richards battled hard behind the net and set up Carcillo with a no-look pass.
