Ohio State revelers tear down goal post after national title win

It wouldn’t be a national championship celebration without a goal post being sacrificed.

After Ohio State’s 42-20 victory over Oregon in the first College Football Playoff national title game on Monday, fans celebrating the Buckeyes’ win broke into Ohio Stadium and tore down a goal post on the south end of the field, an Ohio State University spokesman told the Associated Press.

The goal post, however, was not the regular, permanent post used by Ohio State during its home games -- it was one used for high school football games, spokesman Dan Hedman said.

Still, it wasn’t the only incident caused by large groups of students and fans who took to the streets of Columbus, Ohio, early Tuesday morning after the Buckeyes claimed their eighth national title. Hedman said police responded to various incidents in and around campus.

The Columbus Fire Department responded to 89 reports, including five calls for people with injuries. Columbus police and SWAT members were photographed pepper spraying crowds of revelers.
