Time for pitchers and catchers to report … for the preseason All-American parade.
UCLA’s David Berg, James Kaprielian and Kevin Kramer were named to Collegiate Baseball’s preseason All-American team. Berg was named to the first team, while Kaprielian was on the second team and Kramer on the third team. The three are key elements in the Bruins push to return to the NCAA tournament after a year’s sabbatical.
FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this report stated that Kevin Kramer was named to the preseason All-American second team. He was on the third team.
Berg, a senior closer, has made a Pac-12 record 132 appearances. His 24 saves in 2013 were not only an NCAA single-season record, but also helped the Bruins win their first NCAA title.
Kaprielian, a junior starting pitcher, is projected as a high pick in the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. He was 7-6 with a 2.29 earned-run average and 108 strike outs last season.
Kramer, a junior infielder, missed the 2014 season because of an injury. He hit .278 with three home runs and 42 runs batted in 2013.
UCLA opens its season against Hofstra on Feb. 13.
