USC spring preview: Quarterbacks
USC begins spring practice March 3. We’ll preview each position group before workouts begin.
Quarterbacks
Key returner: Fifth-year senior Cody Kessler
Challengers: Third-year sophomore Max Browne and redshirt freshman Jalen Greene
Newcomer: Freshman Ricky Town
Outlook: Kessler passed for 39 touchdowns, with five interceptions, leading USC to a 9-4 season. He broke the school record when he passed for seven touchdowns in a 56-28 victory over Colorado.
Kessler, preparing for his third season as the starter, has been mentioned as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but he must build chemistry with young receivers after the departure of go-to target Nelson Agholor.
Browne played in six games last season and completed three of seven passes for 42 yards.
Greene practiced on the scout team as a dual-threat quarterback.
Town graduated from Ventura St. Bonaventure High in December and enrolled at USC in January.
