THE BASICS
San Elijo State Beach has 171 campsites. Full hookups (electricity, water, sewer) for RVs are available at 29 spots, nine of which front the ocean. Park Road separates oceanfront (premium) sites from inland sites. Ocean sites are on a bluff overlooking beach, which is accessible by the stairs. Sites have no shade. Check-in time 2 p.m. Check-out time noon. Wireless Internet access is available.
Campers need to plan if they want a spot during the peak season (Memorial Day through the end of summer). Reservations can be made up to seven months in advance.
The campground store operates during the busy season. When the store is closed, firewood must be purchased outside the campground.

About 90 miles from downtown L.A., San Elijo State Beach is the right distance for a weekend getaway. Take Interstate 5 south to the Santa Fe Drive turnoff in Encinitas. Head west for half a mile and take North Coast Highway 101 south two miles to the campground.
