Los Angeles: Hyatt Regency Century Plaza celebrates 45th year with $145 rooms

In 1966, rooms at the spanking new Century Plaza Hotel in Century City cost $21 to $31 a night, and the presidential suite went for a whopping $150 a night. The towering 19-story hotel with its distinctive curve turned 45 on Wednesday and is marking its sapphire anniversary in style. For starters, the hotel will discount room rates to $145 a night.

The deal: The hotel, used frequently by Ronald Reagan during his presidency (he held election-day victory parties there), was designed by architect Minoru Yamasaki, who went on to design the World Trade Center towers in Manhattan.

The hotel, now the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, at 2025 Avenue of the Stars, almost fell under the wrecking ball a few years back. After floating controversial plans to demolish the landmark, the owner-developer came up with a plan to add high-rises to the site instead.

Back to the deal: With the Sapphire Anniversary Specials, rooms start at $145 plus tax on weekends in June.

When: The discounted rate is good Fridays through Sundays, starting Friday, and also on June 10 to 12, 17 to 19 and 24 to 26, subject to availability.

Tested: I went to the hotel’s website and checked availability for June 17 to 19. I found rooms with a king or two double beds at the $145 plus tax rate. In comparison, the hotel’s daily rate for the same room type on the same day without the deal was $269 plus tax a night. Check out the hotel’s Facebook page for other anniversary specials.
